Air rifle team training consists of three phases: basic rifle marksmanship, target acquisition, and specificity training. The season runs August through April when cadets participate in training/practice and area competitions during the season. Pre-season training/practice begins in August and ends in December. Practice days are Monday-Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Area competition starts the first week of January and ends with the GHSA State Championship in April.

Any cadet enrolled in JROTC who meets RMA and GHSA eligibility requirements may compete for a position on the team. Recruitment is ongoing from September through December. Following sufficient training and practice, the athlete must be able to attain a competitive score of 273 out of a possible 300 shooting points (at least 92 out of a possible 100 points from the prone position, 87 points out of a possible 100 points from the standing position, and 94 out of a possible 100 points from the kneeling position). Final cuts and roster completion occur in December.
