JROTC Frequently Asked Questions

Do you recruit for the military? Do many JROTC graduates enter the military?
Many cadets find they enjoy military discipline and structure; it brings out their best and allows them to excel. Some win appointments to one of the military academies and those who choose to enlist can enter the military at a higher rank than those that do not take JROTC, but the JROTC program is not designed to recruit and does not request or expect a military commitment of any kind.

How does JROTC help students go to college?
JROTC training and approaches allow students to understand how to set goals and to focus on the future. In teaching life skills and goal-setting, students have the opportunity to ask themselves “What’s next for me?” and learn how to get there.

What do you do in JROTC?
Cadet on JROTC Rappel TowerJROTC does not teach or recruit military. We teach about leadership, citizenship and life skills. These are things a student needs not only now, but for the rest of his life. JROTC teaches confidence, social skills and respect. JROTC students have the chance to interact with students in other JROTC programs and build relationships not gained in other programs. JROTC students have the opportunity to participate in events such as rappelling, rifle marksmanship training, marching competitions and military-style team sports, such as the JROTC Raider Team and Drill Team.

Are there any fees for uniforms, books, or special equipment?
The JROTC program supplies books and all equipment used in the program.

Is JROTC as difficult as it sounds?
The course is demanding, but most of the students who make an effort really enjoy the challenge and thrive on the hard work and discipline. We demand excellence.

Who teaches JROTC?
JROTC is taught by retired Army personnel with years of experience working with young people. Instructors are certified by the Department of the Army Cadet Command, but they are hired by and work for the school. Besides having state-of-the-art instruction techniques at their command, JROTC instructors serve as exceptional role models for maturing teenagers.

Are there any age requirements for JROTC?
There’s no firm age requirement, but students must be in grades 9-12 to take JROTC classes.
