English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL Program at Riverside Military Academy provides our non-native English-speaking students with the English language skills they need to succeed academically in schools where English is the language of instruction.
Because our primary goal is college placement, our focus is on building the cognitive academic language proficiency of our students so that they each excel in their academic courses and ACT/SAT college entrance exams.
We offer three levels of ESL classes that serve beginning to advanced-level students. See our ESL Overview for complete descriptions.
Coursework is supplemented by field trips into the community to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience with their language skills.
Riverside has added a S.O.A.R. Cultural Immersion Program in order to benefit our international and foreign language cadets. English as a Second Language (ESL) cadets will be provided with opportunities to visit other areas such as Virginia and Washington, D.C. where they will enjoy sights and attractions including the Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery, and Colonial Williamsburg. They will practice their English conversation skills while also reading and writing in English. The Capstone week of the ESL summer program will include an assignment on the cadets' experiences during their cultural immersion trip. The final week of the program will focus on Leadership Camp and preparation for Fall semester.
