English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL Program at Riverside provides our non-native English-speaking students with the English language skills they need to succeed academically in schools where English is the language of instruction.
Because our primary goal is college placement, our focus is on building the cognitive academic language proficiency of our students so that they each excel in their academic courses and on the TOEFL and SAT tests.
We offer four levels of ESL classes and labs that serve beginning to advanced-level students. Additionally, Riverside offers various sheltered classes in world literature and world history (10th grade), American literature and American history (11th grade), and government and economics (12th grade). See our ESL Overview for complete descriptions.
Coursework is supplemented by field trips into the community so that students can gain practical experience with their language skills.
