Frequently Asked Questions
Is the school accredited and by whom?
Riverside is accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Southern Association of Independent Schools.
What is the school's mission and philosophy?
The mission of Riverside Military Academy is to provide a supportive and challenging educational environment that fosters scholarly competence and intellectual curiosity, enhances spiritual and physical fitness, and develops leadership skills and the strength of character necessary for success in college and life. Further, we believe:
- In providing opportunities for each cadet to reach his maximum potential in all academic areas so that he can become a problem solver, critical thinker, collaborative worker, and life-long learner.
- The best way to learn is through active, rather than passive, involvement in the learning process.
- In creating a positive atmosphere of learning in which cadets of all levels, needs and cultural backgrounds feel physically and emotionally safe.
- There is a strong connection between physical and mental development. The sound mind/sound body philosophy is our guiding principle.
- That co/extra-curricular activities are an important part of the total cadet’s holistic developmental program.
- The faculty, staff, and administration serve as primary role models in the lives of our cadets.
Does the school have a special or particular educational focus?
Riverside is a college preparatory school. As an all-boys school, we are able to shape our program in ways that meet the unique educational and developmental needs of boys and provide them tools and skills that help them realize their potential. The military component of our educational environment provides the structure and teaches the leadership skills that instill confidence and character traits that distinguish our graduates from other students.
Are academics rigorous?
Riverside offers a range of college preparatory classes to include honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses to meet the diverse academic needs of our students. As part of its schedule, Riverside maintains two hours of study time each evening, Sunday through Thursday. During this time, teachers are available in a help center.
Riverside also offers valuable services through our Center for Student Excellence, where students can develop better study habits, time management skills, and test-taking proficiency. Additionally, Riverside has twice weekly tutorial sessions, during which students can meet with teachers to receive additional assistance.
What is the school environment like?
Riverside has high expectations for its students, but provides the tools and resources for each student to achieve success. Because our student body works together in company units and teams to achieve their goals, there is a great atmosphere of encouragement and esprit de corps.
How large is the school and its student body?
Riverside’s enrollment averages 350 students each year. Each of our company units averages 40-50 students who reside together in the dormitory. Our average class size of 10-12 students per class means that students get a high level of individual attention.
Where is the school located and what are the transportation options?
Riverside is located in Gainesville, Georgia, about an hour northeast of Atlanta. Gainesville is a suburban community located on Lake Sidney Lanier and in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Riverside is easily accessible from the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport via AAA Airport Express (shuttle) or other private transportation. Additionally, there are commercial bus and railroad depots in Gainesville.
Are students required to enter the military after graduation?
No. As a college preparatory school, the majority of our graduates go on to pursue degrees in traditional colleges and universities.
